Embolden WI Board of Directors Job Description

​

Embolden WI amplifies and catalyzes innovative projects & initiatives to improve health outcomes and equity for Wisconsin. We envision healthy, vibrant, equitable, and socially just communities in Wisconsin and beyond. Embolden WI is primarily a fiscal sponsorship organization, offering both grantee relationship- and comprehensive fiscal sponsorship- models to Wisconsin health and equity causes. As such, board members are a key component of ensuring all projects supported by Embolden are aligned with our mission and are, or have the potential to become, self-sustaining endeavors in our community. This widely needed service emboldens individuals and causes to raise their voice and affect their communities for years to come.

 

The Embolden WI Board of Directors is comprised of at least 3 and no more than 11 members, elected for two-year terms. They are charged with the supervision and oversight of Embolden WI’s operations. Ultimately, board members serve as ambassadors for Embolden’s mission, encouraging collaboration within the non-profit community and seeking support for Embolden’s work. 

 

As a fiscal sponsor non-profit, the Board of Directors

  • Determines the mission and purpose of the organization

  • Selects and reviews the Executive Director

  • Ensures effective planning to seek out and support new initiatives

  • Determines project match to Embolden’s mission and capacity

  • Monitors financial resources and organization assets

  • Ensures legal and ethical integrity

  • Enhances the organization’s public standing

 

Members of the Board of Directors

  • Serve as leading ambassadors of Embolden WI's mission, projects, and services.

  • Agree to a two-year board term with the option of renewal for three consecutive terms.

  • Are expected to dedicate 10-15 hours per quarter to engage as a leader of Embolden WI. 

  • Regularly attend and prepare for bimonthly Board meetings and important related meetings.

  • Serve on at least one sub-committee and attend committee meetings to complete the work of the board.

  • Prepare and approve necessary organizational policies.

  • Commit to an annual philanthropic commitment as determined by the individual board member and fundraise/recruit members on behalf of the organization.

  • Participate in an annual self-evaluation of personal board service.

  • Participate in the hiring and oversight process of the Executive Director.

  • Be knowledgeable about Embolden WI’s mission, vision, projects, and events.

  • Stay informed about Board matters, prepare themselves for meetings, and review and comment on issues of importance.

  • Build a collegial working relationship with other board members and stakeholders that fosters active participation and creates collaborative solutions.

  • Respond to requests for feedback or decisions between meetings in a timely manner.

  • Understand or commit to learning about non-profit financial statements and monitoring fiscal sponsorship relationships for ongoing fit and solvency.

 

Qualifications for Service

  • Past or current engagement with Embolden WI - previously The Wisconsin Alliance for Women’s Health - (e.g., partners, donors, participants, volunteers, etc.)

  • Interest in and willingness to support Embolden WI’s goals and objectives

  • “Skin in the game” for eliminating health inequity and fostering civic engagement in underrepresented communities
